DOUBLES 2024

THE HEREFORDSHIRE

Always a warm welcome at The Herefordshire and the weather behaved too, which made for an enjoyable afternoon, unless you were eaten alive by the insects!

The Hereford marathon was on, but road closures did not affect us. Although rumour has it Robbo saw a “Drinks Station Ahead” sign and wanted to stop for a livener?

Obviously, an even number is required for doubles, so when Tony Poyner had to withdraw at the last-minute Jerry Hibbert stepped in, or should I saw “rode in.”

He was forced to use a buggy, having got blisters from forcing his size 12 trotters into size 10 shoes the day before. However, his partners were vey happy as he was sent ahead to search for errant balls, with great success it would appear.

The pairings, drawn just before tee time, threw up some interesting pairings.

  • Big hitting duo – Robbo & Gaz

  • Heavyweight division – Keyo & Josh

  • Young bucks – Sam & Chris S

Chris wearing white shorts looking like he had on trousers this early in the season.

Keyo was fined for teeing up in front of the markers as were Nick and Terry for taking their trolleys across the alternate green on the 9th. He got me and Dave back, when we went left when a sign obviously left over from winter, said right.

Brian was fined for driving through the group in front as was Dave for marking Terry’s card and making 17 & 16 equal 34.

Talking about our Chairperson he was striking the ball well and strutting around until he got to the green and could not hole a putt, which was when his alter ego T. Retts made a few appearances.

So, to the results;

  • NP – Robbo

  • NP 2 – Darren

  • 3rd – Josh & Keyo – 60 pts.

  • 2nd – Greg & Simon – 67.

  • 1st – Steve & Chris R – 73.

A resounding victory and retention, well done boys and surely a cut now for Steve?

Speaking of handicaps, rumour has it that Sam felt his handicap was unreal and asked for a cut from 18 and as his 21 points shows it may well be wrong?

A few other things to note. Dave finally got his Champ of Champs 2023 presented, as the captain finally remembered to bring it and after all the excitement, he forgot to present the doubles trophy to Chris and Steve and fined himself.

Next up Fulford Heath 31st May.
