NEVILLE GREEN PLATE 2024

FULFORD HEATH

Another PGS favourite having been visited many times, which never disappoints, although it was a bit wet in places. Everyone knows the location; however, someone still missed the M42 junction, arrived late and got a fine. To add insult, Spud had scoffed his bacon bap. What else could go wrong for Chris J?

A great turnout with 26 players including 4 guests, which included a couple of “blasts from the past” making a welcome appearance, Robbie Davis, and Kev Lloyd, who hopefully we will see again.

We were advised before arrival by the captain, assisted by Jerry Hibbert (who doesn’t even need to attend to cause havoc) that the bar only accepted cash. Not true and the skipper duly fined himself for duff info.

During his captain’s brief, Robbo gave a message to self, “don’t forget the NP markers.” He did and again fined himself.

So out onto the course and we find ourselves behind the slowest 4 ball, in buggies, ever seen. By the time we reached the 2nd, we already had two groups on the tee, so it was a sign of what was to come.

The 2nd is a layup then a 9 or wedge over the water to the green. Keyo was in perfect position for his shot in, knifed it towards the tee, scattering Robbo, Spud and Maz. Fortunately, it went in the bunker by the tee, so no damage done.

Terry “putter” Mead was again in fine form holing putts from ridiculous places. However, on the 3rd, he didn’t have to bother as he chipped in. On the same hole I laid up off the tee, to find a dead tree standing about 20 feet away. Surely it was so thin I couldn’t hit that!!!

Arriving at the 6th we found that the snails had let our first group through, they then took another 10 minutes to clear. It would not be until the 10th that they finally let us through and that was only because they were having a picnic.

Before we got there, we met the other group coming down 10, as they had come on our fairway, with Robbo managing to put it very close to the water. Keyo had gone one better, going in the stream, but coming to rest on an “island.”

Robbo went first, with an awful downhill lie in long grass, managed to hoick it onto the other bank, where he nearly fell backwards hitting it out. Keyo meanwhile took his stance on the grass in the stream and hit a good shot. Photographic evidence for both is available.

By my standards I was playing the par-3’s well. Having birdied 5, par on 11 and 10 feet away on 16, Jack then turned up and I walked off with a 3 putt!

Simon was having a bad putting day, so he said but still managed to come in with a 72, while Vic was blaming Sylv for nicking his Jelly Babies, as the reason he ran out of steam.

Chris J gets another mention for going in a tree on 14 and finding the ball in a bird’s nest. Nev used his scoop to retrieve it, disturbing the birds, which is apparently not the first time he has disturbed birds!

Chris R was having a good round, but it unravelled on 17, when he hit 3 balls off the tee, but found his first. Things got worse on 18, when he hacked his way to an 8, hence the photo at the presentation. What might have been?

Despite the snails we managed to get in before dark and the results were.

  • NP – JV

  • NP 2 – Matt S.

  • 3rd – Smiler Rawlings - 72

  • 2nd – Smiling Mino – 70

  • 1st – Laughing Robbo – 69

A great knock by the captain and a good time was had by most.

Next up Blackpool!!
