The Memorial Trophy 2024
Walsall Golf Club
The Memorial Trophy!! It certainly, for different reasons, was memorable for certain members who made the journey up the motorways to Walsall. For others, on the day the Olympics finished, they upheld the Olympic motto "that it is not the winning, but the taking part that counts"!! I am also pleased to report that this being the first match since the Mafia trounced the also rans there was no jibbing and good banter was an ongoing characteristic of the day.
We first played this parkland course last year in glorious weather and once again the sun shone on 22 members and one guest. There should have been 24 players in total but, according to his chums gossip, Dave Humpreys had been out on the lash the night before, lost his phone and failed to advise the captain in good time that he wouldn’t be there and lost his match fee. There will also be future fines to come.
After excellent bacon rolls the Sailes clan (by prior arrangement - and no bacon rolls) went out with Captain Robbo in the first group. Robbo was nearest to the pin in two on the 6th having driven the green but then three putted from 15 feet and duly fined himself. Guest Ross was also nearest to the pin on the 10th but along with his clansmen was absent at the end and his prize went begging. For this group there are also future fines to come by disappearing early!!
Sam Marshall was guilty of a product placement infringement by parking his firms van on the front row in full view of the clubhouse and 18th green and was gently asked to move it to a less prominent place.
Andy Price fresh from a hip replacement shared a buggy with "Aye" David Yule. They were guilty of taking said buggy over a bridge by the 18th that said buggys had to use a different route and were duly fined.
The third group of relative youth - namely Spud, Gaz and lactating Chris were led by the father figure of Pete Jolley. Now interestingly Pete won this trophy in both 2022 and 2023 and was seeking a hatrick but when it was suggested if was successful he would be expected to buy a full round of drinks he chose to use his new found leadership skills to encourage the youth and this team went on the comprehensively win the team prize. However this group was also fined for frequently driving through the group in front.
The greens proved to be tricky with 3 put fines a plenty. Lost balls also regularly featured and for such as Maz and cool Cuth the ten shot rule and then pick up came into play more than once. Moreover, for Cuth his memorable day got worse with 2 tens in the last three holes, three lost balls, being in the last group (again) and drawing David H in the sweep so his day was fully cursed!
It proved to be a close and exciting finish with count back coming into play. Both Gaz and Ian finished with net 70 and were both level on the back nine so it went to the next stage and Gaz pipped the quiet and reserved Ian to win. Chris Scarrett (who appeared to be having pre menopausal issues!! - long story and you had to be there) was third with a net 73.
It was a typically good society day enjoyed by (I think) all!
Our next event is Friday 23 August at Lillybrook, so hope to see most of you there.
