Angel Cup 2024

Woodlake Park

And so we came to the climax of the season. The prestigious Angel Cup was up for grabs. Woodlake Park, near Usk was the venue - a course that has served us all well in the past. Captain Robbo, who was recovering from his splendid endeavours of Hill Valley and Captains away day, was enjoying sunny climes in Spain so it was the versatile stand in Ian - dressed in his wife's pyjama bottoms who called us all to order.

The bacon rolls were arguably the best we have enjoyed this season and after Ian's words of wisdom and random interruptions from the Chairman we were ready to play.

For the uninitiated the top ten ranked players playing on the day based on their performance over the season get between 1 and 4 shots back. So such as Gaz who was cut to 17 after Hill Valley actually played off 21 - but his performance over the season under the AC rules warranted this. He did however immediately give one shot back by taking an air shot on his drive on the first tee!!

There were 17 players - but by the end of the second hole we were down to 16 as some bug hit Josh and he was seen running (a rare sight) to the gents and never returned.

A hackers four ball in front of our groups ensured play was never quick. This allowed Dan to seek lost balls from the hay fields and hedge rows and he found 20 balls which should last him a couple of more rounds given his recent driving accuracy!!

True to form Pete Jolley had an outburst of groans and club abuse and was rightly fined. Jerry as fines master in Terrys absence had a memorable day - slipping on the fake grass path near the 15th and landing on his arse. He then managed to take 23 shots in completing the last two holes!!

We were all fortunate that the rain stayed off but for most of us in windy conditions the course was a challenge with relatively high scores dominating. There were however two notable exceptions - both in the last group where the first and second place were to be found.

First and AC winner - John Whitehead - net 74 -your winners jumper is on order!!

Second - Dave Adams - net 77

Third -  Gaz - net 78

Team Prize - Team 5 - John, Dave, Robin and Daren

Nearest the pin on 7th - Bish

Nearest the pin in 2 on 18th - My good self!

With the season now concluded all members are invited to the AGM at Pershore Gents Club at 6.30 pm Tuesday 5 November.

It is also appropriate to record here that Gaz's third place confirmed his position of Champion of Champions for 2024 and huge congratulations are in order. No doubt the winners shield will be presented to him at the AGM.

As ever it has been a great season with super banter and good courses. Thanks go to all members for all contributions. Enjoy the winter and stay on the short stuff

Cheers - Tim
