WINTER SPECIAL/CUP/GLASS BALL
BEWDLEY PINES 2025
Saturday 22nd February saw a good collective of 30 Pershore GS golfers arrive at Bewdley Pines Golf Club for a Winter Special, which was also the second half of the Winter Cup which isn’t actually a cup, more of a strange round glass thing on a stick.
Fortunately, my arrival wasn’t marred by a fine that even Terry Mead couldn’t equal, given that there was a speed camera van parked just before Stourport. Did anybody speed past it??
For a change, everybody arrived on time, well before the Captain’s Brief, which was actually easily done given that Il Capitano was 10 minutes late starting! Also, the first tee time was delayed 30 minutes due to a fog issue earlier in the morning, presumably while we were all at home in bed. So, there was plenty of time for chatting and catching up and then scoffing and quaffing the bacon rolls and coffee.
How lucky we were with the weather given the rains of the day before and the deluge all day on Sunday. Bewdley is known for being a dry course and didn’t disappoint, the sun was out and despite a couple of short light showers, it was dry and warm and there was NO mud. Bliss!
The greens were a bit tricky, but overall, the course was in great condition, and fortunately everyone got round before dark despite the later start.
Of course there was the usual plethora of players letting themselves down, the Society down, their families down, even the King and Country down with their poor behavior. It’s all good for the Captain’s Charity though.
Thankfully we had Mr. Ian (Rachel Reeves) Brazier to take our hard-earned money off us as Fines Master, stepping in for the “sorely” missed Terry M, who could be languishing in a Dubai prison for all we know. Ian started with fining our esteemed Chairman who excelled himself by slashing his tee shot into the woods on the 15th and then climbing the fence to look for it, ignoring the “Keep Out Private Woods” sign. Meanwhile Ian B himself was hacking out from under a Christmas tree then shanking the next shot which
hit DA’s buggy. You couldn’t make it up!!
Gaz was fined for more big hitting, driving through Pricey’s group ahead. A lot of us would happily fork out a quid to be able to hit it that far.
With the Captain’s Game Book App up and running now, creating spontaneous fun and thrills for all with up-to-date scores, there were all-round fines for one group which failed to upload anything. Yes, sadly my group! Fitz was exempt, being a guest. Kev Lloyd and newbie, Gary Goodwin, did download the App but weren’t befriended by Robbo so couldn’t upload any scores. Then there was “Luddite of the day”, i.e. yours truly, who left his “tech” in the car. Shameful! I was fortunate to get away with the quid fine given that in the 1800’s, the original Luddites were given the death penalty for the lesser crime of burning down Textile Mills.
Right, onto the RESULTS for the day.
Bish got NP and Robbo NP in 2, both with cracking shots.
Adam Izod, Mark Bellamy and Pete Jolley won the team prize with help of Killer’s additional score (who got
nothing!).
The Winter Special winner was Nigel Weaver with a great knock of 38. Winning on countback from Tony Owo who can only regret his OB on the 16th. However, Tony still had the great honour of collecting the fabbo Winter Not-Cup trophy after his excellent rounds at both Ludlow and Bewdley.
Well done to all winners, and a great thank you to everyone for their hard work organising a superb day out.
Next up South Staffs.
