2026 Memorial Trophy
To say I was prepared to script this report is an overstatement, but when Skipper Tezza asked how could I refuse but rather like the number on the day it is small but perfectly formed……
A total of twelve members and one guest gathered for the Memorial Trophy which is played for in remembrance of those previous members not with us today with Kelvin being the most recent but I feel it’s also important to include the wider loved ones so condolences to Daren T , Steve G and David Y on this day.
On to the golf then, warm day, low cloud cover and a little breezy but all good so far. Being in the last group it was a privilege to watch the first three groups go off, no wayward shots ish, some might even say ‘shaped’ shots ish and like watching the TV ish? Badgers set first and Deer Park second nine.
There was one statement heard though at the start, the eventually winner declared that they had pulled themselves (leave it) in the sweep, was not playing very well and therefore no chance of winning it!
The last group consisted of myself, Forrest as the guest, Mike J and Mark W with the latter going birdy, birdy first two holes followed by double bogey, double bogey. It’s a funny old game and it must have been on his mind as when on the 4th he declared he had lost his driver, asked the group behind us and they reported it had been left on the previous tee box. Now, you may usually leave a wedge on the side of the green, but I had never heard of this before so like all good reporters sensing a scoop asked him for a quote. He replied that “I need to see a Doctor about doing that”!
Other reported incidents were the Chairmans alter ego ‘him’ making an appearance taking his ‘dry’ pond shot into the reed bed just to make sure it was unpayable several times; Chris R getting very intense and serious measuring his length on the 18th; Tezza for slow play through the front 9; Ayyyy for driving back around the course shouting “wedge, where are yee”. And lastly back to our group and apt that we had Forrest with us as Mike J hit a tree on circa 15 of the 18 holes with a fair number thumping two trees therefore a new career as a lumberjack beckons!
The parkland course played well with a good variety of holes, some greens were tricky and many approach shots were downhill therefore a need to judge the bounce and with only two minor rain squalls in total we got away with it.
Usual banter, fun and frivolity in the spirit of the society with results, NP2 Mark W, NP Domonic S, 3rd Mark W, 2nd yours truly and 1st ‘ Mr. I wont win it’ Steve G therefore congratulations.
