NEVILLE GREEN PLATE – Medal Day 2 - BROMSGOVE 2022

Over this special and joyous Platinum Jubilee weekend there have been numerous events both big and small that have attracted the public’s attention. The PGS medal at Bromsgrove is certainly up there with the best of them.

26 players and 1 guest returned to Bromsgrove following the excellent day we enjoyed last August when the current captain was victorious!!

However, if the real truth be known the key reason we wished to return was for the excellent full English breakfast which once again did not disappoint! The early morning feast had a side attraction as a group of glammed up ladies were washing theirs down with prosecco in readiness for ladies day at Worcester races – At this point the gathered golfers were studying form and all had a fancy on a well ridden filly donned in scarlet and it is safe to say none would have won the Richard Branson sponsored Virgin stakes.

With that gaggle of womenfolk duly departed the captain gave his usual comprehensive address and introduced a new concept – the team snake, whereby a rubber toy snake was to be held by one player in each group when he was the latest player to encounter a bunker or water hazard with the guy who held it at the end of the round contributing coffers to the captains charity. A good fun idea Pete and a decent charity earner!

The captain then teed off and un-characteristically knobbed it

off the tee. It later transpired he had been practising for the

tour by being out on the pop the night before. Then, as he got

his act together and walked down the fairway the Red Arrows

fly past he (as a former serving military man) had arranged

gave us all a wave as they flew east – well done Pete –

a nice topical touch and a hard act to follow!!

In fact in the first two groups some of the first drives were

wayward but not so with the languid, gentle style of one

Mark Young who went straight down the middle. At this point a

member of the watching crowd announced that Mark always

starts well but if ever he has a chance of being near the top he

blows up later in the round – well.. we shall see!

Despite the forecast we were lucky with the weather.

The course called for prudent game management with plenty

of trees and tight dog legs to negotiate. The greens were

particularly good and true. There was the usual mix of luck

and indifferent play. Mr B, the fines-master of the day, when

approaching the 6th (nearest to the pin in 2) ended up with a

ten and one of his (golf) balls is still stuck in a tree. Nick M was duly fined for smashing a drive into the red ladies tee marker and the Jolley of the notso variety was back to his club abuse antics. Dominic managed to five put from less than six feet. Steve “the vice” High put his tee shot in the water on the 16th but still got a four on this challenging hole. However, it was pleasing that this was a controversy free day with all holes played in the correct order!

Mike Ciric and Chairman Keith tried to go into a bunker on nearly every hole and thus their groups respective snakes were in constant demand. This particular scribes round was going OK and trying to gee up his colleagues for the team prize but fell foul of the water on the 16th and ended up with a lucky six – this was to prove costly as up ahead in group two word filtered through that Messrs Marshall of the junior variety and the aforementioned calm Mark were going head to toe and using their copious shots to good effect.

As we all eventually returned to the clubhouse for a well earned beer there was concern as the sixth group under the leadership of Mr Brittan were very slow to come in and were rightly duly fined for slow play.

With all the results in the podium was filled as follows:-

Nearest to Pin – Gaz Walden – the only one to hit the green

Nearest to the pin in 2 – Matt Sailes

Team Prize – Group B – Mark, Steve, Keith and Sam

Third Place Net 64 – Tim Kilby

Second Place (on CB) Net 64 – Sam Marshall

WINNER – Net 62 – Mark Young.

Well played Mark – by all accounts very steady golf and no blow ups this time but a handicap cut awaits!! Another successful Society day – thanks to all involved and for most of us the next gathering is the Tour in Torquay – see you
