NEVILLE GREEN PLATE

BROMSGROVE 2023

When JV announced the participants for this event on the Friday, the winner from the last event was not showing, was this because he thought as winner last time, he got automatic entry or was it because he forgot to pay?

As it was 23 turned out on a beautiful June day to have breakfast and then make a dog’s dinner of the golf, well some of us anyway.

When me and Terry arrived captain Steve and his assistant Matt were still trying to figure out how to put the board stand together, which they managed to do before anyone noticed.

It was suggested by someone, who shall remain nameless that the draw be fixed so that we could go out second. I said absolutely not, so a legitimate draw was made.

Off to the 1st with the two board members going off with guest Mark. Skipper hit a beauty down the middle, Mark scuffed one down the hill and Matt carved two into the trees right. Both Steve and Matt got on the green in two, difference being Matt made par and Steve 5-putted.

My tee shot ended up in a bunker left, which wouldn’t be the last I would visit. Dave Adams smoked one down the middle which also would not be his last one.

Waiting for the green to clear on 4, the group exited right, only to appear 30 seconds later having gone to the wrong tee. Not Sandwellgate, just a fine.

Chris Rawlings looked to be in the wrong weight category, playing with Keyo, Tony Soper and Sumo and they had some difficulty keeping up with the group in front, upsetting the rhythm of the group behind, Chris his brother Notso, JV and Spud, meaning they only had two podium places!

Steady Whitehead had a mare by his standards, getting in a greenside bunker for 2 and walking off with 7 and then playing the wrong ball on 18. Maybe his mind was already on the M5, causing havoc towing his tin-hut to Cornwall.

Walking down 10 we noticed 6 balls, two of them belonged to Josh, who had carved them off the tee to within 10 yards of each other. Meanwhile I managed to get in yet another fairway bunker, took 3 to get out for a hard fought 9.

On 17 Chris J hit his tee shot left, where it hit a sign stopping it being lost, chipped on and holed the putt for 3. On 18, Chris R finally got a spurt on when he had to chase his trolley across the green.

After the dust or sand in my case, had settled the results were.

  • NP – Chris Jolley.

  • NP 2 – Chris Scarratt

  • 3rd – Chris Jolley - 70

  • 2nd – Chris Vincent – 69

  • 1st – Chris Moody – 64

None of this countback nonsense for Nick with his inaugural victory. Well played Nick and your odds have dropped for the Cardiff tour which is our next event.
