MAXSTOKE PARK
The first medal of the season and a select group assembled at Maxstoke for this prestigious event, which turned out to be less controversial than last year, and much easier to win due to the reduced field.
With several members away causing havoc in Turkey and a couple of late withdrawals, Captain Steve having strained his back lifting a sack of vegetables and Gaz suffering from a strained sack, there were just 18 to contest the spoils.
Proceedings were left in the capable hands of JV and Matt, and it did not take long for PGS to make themselves known to the locals.
There is a large practice area by the car park with a sign saying “Do not hit towards the car park” but as it was in English, so didn’t apply to David Yule, who was shouted at by the owner of an expensive Jaguar, for doing just that.
Greg Michael incurred a fine having arrived after JV’s brief. Notso breaking with tradition, not only arrived early but was drawn in the second group. However, somethings still hold good, and he proceeded to NR on 10, was talked out of slashing his wrists by David and Nick, even though that scuppered their chance of the team prize.
We eventually got away, albeit late due to Maxstoke still using a ball chute which some locals obviously ignore.
The first group of Matt, JV and Pricey all managed to avoid the fairway on the 1st with Pricey putting it OB, but he wouldn’t be the last.
I was in the 4th group with Robin and Darren who both managed to avoid the OB on hole 1, by not hitting it far enough to even reach the fairway. Then while waiting to play our approach to the green, we witnessed some club abuse by our chairperson, after duffing a chip.
Onto the 2nd which was nearest the pin where David’s earlier practice in the car park paid off and Robin then joined the OB club, putting one down the road, he then proceeded to put two OB on the 3rd for a 10. Robin had a torrid front 9 scoring 59, blaming it on jetlag, having arrived back from Costa Rica on Saturday. He obviously felt better on the back with 12 shots less.
With the rain on and off it made for some slow play but the group behind us of McD, Greg and Sumo took it to a new level losing a hole and a half by the turn. Mike blaming it on the amount of lip outs he had.
It was good to see Simon the Redge back to fitness and making it all the way round even if, together with his partners, the two Chris's they were a further hole behind.
Anyway, we made it in before dark and after the dust settled the results were.
· NP – Car park Yule
· NPin2 – Standin JV
· 3rd – Chairperson Adams - 73
· 2nd – Secretary Rawlings - 71
· 1st – 7 wood McDowell – 68
Well played Cuth and obviously a substantial cut on the way once Gaz recovers from his own cut.
