CHRISTMAS SPECIAL – LUDLOW – 29 December 2022

A new era is upon us as we start the 2023 season!! 28 members seeking to escape leftover turkey and Christmas Pud gathered at Ludlow GC. A Stableford day forming the first half of the Winter Cup being played on a well drained course within the confines of Ludlow Racecourse.

New (young) Captain Steve was there bright and early and was relieved to see the new (also young) handicap secretary Gaz arrive as he needed help in erecting the easel on which to place the score board. Surely two tech savvy gents would complete this simple piece of mechanical construction! After much head scratching and no progress they were relieved to see Ex Capt Doddy (not so young) arrive and pass on his building experience.

Attention within the clubhouse was also drawn to the most pitiful and unusual Christmas tree festooned with a few random ballballs. It transpired that the Earl of Plymouth, who we learnt owns the land, gives all his tenants (including the LGC) a 16 foot Christmas tree every year. However with a relatively low ceiling it has been crudely cut in half and hence the woeful specimen on display.

And so to the golf. We experienced four weather seasons in one day from low sunshine to wind and sudden showers. Slow play dominated. The first group lead by Capt High getting soaked when having crossed the Melling Road for the first time were victim to a speeding passing car which on going through a deep puddle sprayed water over the hedge and onto the four waiting to tee off on the third. This group clearly had no new watches from Santa as the 3 minute rule to find a ball – was it always Jerry’s ball? – was never adhered to and caused backlogs down the field.

Alan Taylor once clearly had a dream of being a jockey and thus spent a great deal of his round beyond the white fences and played off numerous hoof markings. Chairman Dave was so wayward with his tee shot on the 10th it went side-wards into the car park and narrowly missed Pete’s car. He was duly fined.

It was good to see Fines master Terry being relatively lenient at the start of the season but Pricey fell foul by wearing the absent Ian Braziers strides and Cuth’s air-shot did not go without further financial penalty. Terry proudly wore his new Angel Cup sweater which for once saw him conservatively dressed in dark blue rather than the usual vivid pinks, yellows and greens he usually displays!

There were a number of players all scoring between 27 and 33 points including birthday boy Nick Moody but the winning places / scores were as follows:

Best team – Doddy, Alan T, Simon T and Nev

Nearest the Pin – John Vincent – who is thanked for being the Vice on the Day – We await Robbo to take up the reins

Nearest the pin in 2 on the long 18th – Darren Thompson – being one of only two to get on the green – the other being The Redge who we were all pleased to see back in fold after his recent set back

3rd Place – Simon Tenant – 35 points

2nd Place – Nev Green – 38 points – on countback

1st Place – Sam Marshall – 38 points Well played Sam – good to see another youngster getting a mention – I think us older guys have to step up!!

The next event (and second part of the Winter Cup) is at Bewdley Pines on 25 February.

Hope to see most of you there A Happy New Year to all members
