Mud Mud glorious Mud!! But we still had fun. Some 20 members met at Upper Sapey for this year’s doubles. Prior to the event there was uncertainty to how many would play – and for the anal amongst you we ideally wanted an even number divisible by four – And that is what we ended up with!! Sadly, for different reasons Dan and “the Redge” had to drop out at the last minute and hence this hastily assembled (substitute scribe) account of the days events! Robbo and I were looking forward to the defence of our 2022 success but as the live draw was made it was clear there were some keen parings as the pros and the duffers were put together. This included a strong Robin Eaton / Mino combination and last years singles finalists Bish and Notso. Fair play to Pete J who recommended placing even in the rough given the in places sodden state of the course. The Captain teed off and lost his ball in the adjacent field – he blamed his new driver. Josh was trying to do a Keith Weller of 1980s fame and wore his partners tights with shorts – not a pretty sight and was rightly later fined. Chairman Dave had a mixed round but had a nightmare 13th (long par 3) and was fined for club abuse. The foxes footballing woes were clearly impacting my short puts albeit long puts and chips into the hole off the green were OK. News via JV came mid round that Rodgers was sacked but by that time the Robbo/ Killer defence was on the wain. We still fared far better than the parings including the father / son Taylors who have clearly been wasting money on recent lessons. Most of the greens were a bit soggy and hard to read. The society in front of us were hardly swift and this impacted our rhythm. Some people believed the course should not have been open and certainly should not have allowed trolleys but I guess the club needed the income from two societies and in fairness we were all made very welcome to the refurbished clubhouse. Daren won nearest the pin – probably as a result of being fined in practising his chips onto the putting green and also falling for the Captains April 1st message of being prepared to play in wellies. The longest drive was won by Secretary Chris Rawlings – a drive of some 240 yards with very little roll. The results were very tight in the end with count back very much coming into play Third Place – Pete Jolley and Gary Bishop combined Stapleford – 62 points Second Place – Terry Mead and Josh Hazelwood – 62 points Winners – Steve High and Chris Rawlings – 62 points The highest individual score – as it affected the usual sweep – was Josh – a fantastic 36 points and adds some credibility that you may look comical on the course but if the ball keeps going in the hole why worry? Well played Joshyour handicap reduction awaits. Hope to see a good turnout at our next event – the first medal of the year at Maxstoke Park on 30 April
